activate tethering on Windows XP with an android Nexus S phone

Below are the steps to make tethering work on windows xp with a nexus s phone:

  1. download the following file (tetherxp.inf) which is the usb driver windows xp will ask for
  2. connect the nexus s to your computer using the usb cable
  3. ensure debugging mode is turned off on the phone or turn it off (Settings > Developer options > USB debugging)
  4. activate tethering on the phone (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering and portable hotspot > USB tethering)
  5. at this stage, windows should ask for a driver, do the following:
    1. choose “do not connect to the internet”
    2. select “I have a file”
    3. click on browse and select the file downloaded at step1
    4. click on next and perform install

That’s it.

You should be able to tether by now.
